Completely agree with a poster above… If there is nothing to risk with – why not?? TurboTax software products always had a great quality.

Don’t know why Tim Geitner had problems figuring out how to use it. I’ve been using TurboTax for years. At first I did it as a back-up to my CPA and TurboTax came up with exactly the same results as my CPA. Years later, I started using TurboTax instead of my CPA. I’ve saved tons of money and headaches, and I seem to get faster refunds.

I’ve been using TTax since the old DOS version (maybe 91-92 or so?) and altho nothing is perfect, it hasn’t caused me the kind of trouble that H&R Block did the first year I started my DJ business! It works very well and if you also use Quicken, doing your taxes just doesn’t get any easier than this! The only caveat is making sure your tax-related items in Quicken are properly associated with the Tax line items.

I have been using Turbo Tax since day one. I used Macintax prior to Turbo Tax. Turbo Tax replaced Macintax.
I have never had a problem with Turbo Tax.
Good features:
You provide the basic data, and Turbo Tax retains the information from year to year.
When you do the next year taxes, Turbo Tax will import data from the previous year.
State Taxes: If you live in NYS you need to wait to at least February or early March, because the State may make changes.
When you are ready to submit taxes, it is advisable to check for updates.
I would advise doing taxes at late as possible, because tax updates may need to be imported from the Federal and or the State.
Always check the final product before submitting. Check for errors.
If you have changes from year to year make sure the correct figures are entered in your tax forms on Turbo Tax.
Disadvantages:
Turbo Tax takes you from step to step.
Printing: Tell Turbo Tax which forms you want to print. Else you may end up with a book of forms, and information you do not want or need.
W-2 make sure the correct information is entered from your W-2. Especially if your data was imported from the year before.
Before the final product go over every form, line by line and make sure the correct information is submitted.

Still waiting for papers in the mail to file, but first pass through seemed to cover everything as in past years and all the forms that I needed were available. I have used TTax to file my taxes for many years now and have yet to run into any serious problems. I recommend it and e-filing works great both for federal and state (MD).

I saw in a number of reviews problems with downloading the program. I am using Windows 7, and had no problems at all. Very easy process that took ten minutes or so from start to finish. I am a long time Turbotax user, and I am sticking with it.

No surprises on a reliable product. The download from Amazon was flawless on a Windows 7 platform. All updates and state downloads installed easily. The product is familiar and used previous files to enter basic information to speed the process. Some personal tax information (W-2 for larger companies) and 1099s are able to be automatically downloaded and entered into your return. The only criticism is the cost of the state e-file filing. With the large number of turbotax packages being sold this should be a value added service that is included.

I’ve been using Turbo Tax since way back in the Mac In Tax days. These days you automatically get the Mac version right on the installation disc when you buy any version of Turbo Tax at a retailer or even as a download from Intuit or an online retailer. So there is no longer a “Mac Tax” in Turbo Tax. The 2009 version seems to be at a minimum no worse than last year, and likely a bit of an improvement (it seems easier to navigate this year). Bundling eFile probably works for 90% of tax filers who would use a retail version of Turbo Tax in the first place, especially anybody who expects a tax refund since eFilers get tax refunds back from the IRS much faster than paper filers do. And if you already use Quicken or used Turbo Tax last year the super easy importing of all that tedious data saves literally hours when it comes time to do your taxes this year.

OK, so Intuit is run by greedy jerks. Yeah it sucks to have to pay for efile that I don’t need, but this is still a great tax prep program and forty bucks (shop around) is still two hundred and sixty bucks less than my accountant used to charge me.

I had no problems installing on XP Pro and so far it looks just like the same old program to me.

In any case, I don’t see a lot of alternative suggestions from the complainers…

I’ve used TurboTax for many years to prepare my tax return without incurring the major cost of a CPA. And each year it becomes better and easier to use! Intuit continues to make improvements even when I can see no need for them.

I have been doing my taxes for over 15 years with TurboTax. Each and every year they introduce new capabilities into the platform. Additionally, each and every year, my tax situation becomes even more and more complex. I am a long form filer with Schedule A, B, C, D, SE, H needs and complex partnerships for oil and gas wells. They take it all into consideration.

I have yet to have anybody find any problems with my returns. And when the IRS has questioned anything, I have great documentation of the history. I am also a religious Quicken user – I highly recommend using Quicken and TurboTax the way they are designed to she info.

I was a beta tester for the Mac version of TurboTax 2009. Although I’ve been a fan since the program first was introduced, I’ve become even more of one since I became a beta tester. Last year, the beta testers were limited to testing pre-defined scenarios. This year, we were encouraged to try it out anyway we wanted, and to put in all kinds of suggestions, bug reports, etc. They listened carefully, and a huge number of improvements were made to the program. I personally am a big fan of their bookmarking feature, where I can mark something and come back later, among other things. I also like their online community feature, since I, like you, can remember the painful days of calling and holding on forever, whereas now we just answer each other, and TT experts add in their own answers as needed. I am still waiting for the day when TT and Quicken on a Mac seamlessly feed each other, something that has never been available in the Mac world as a perfectly done implementation from any vendors. But I must say, as a former MacInTax user from ancient times, I’m really impressed with all the improvements that have been made in the product ever since. And sure, none of these programs are free any more, but I certainly felt that I got value for my money.

See the review that found multiple problems with entering donations in December. Did you actually test the Mac software for ability to enter donations?

Review by admin, January 25, 2010

I can’t remember if I did, but I was only one of hundreds. I’m not delighted to hear that, since I enter donations myself, but haven’t gotten to doing that yet on my personal taxes. I know that Intuit monitors places like this, so I’m sure (or at least hopeful) that they will address any problems listed up here before I start to do mine. It just shows that even with a huge, fairly critical, testing base, something can still sneak through. Let me read that review to see what it is.

I am a CPA and a beta tester for TurboTax 2009. I have been using this product for several years. Over the past 20 plus years, I have used several different tax packages, and find TurboTax the very best for preparing your own tax returns.

The item name reads Federal, State and e-file. Well, you have to pay for the State so that is a deceptive sale. I think I am owed the State return also as has been in the past.

Review by admin, January 25, 2010

The only cases where you should need to pay anything for the state return:
- if you use the on-line version of TT.
- if you want to e-file the state return.
- if you want to prepare returns for 2 or more states.
Preparing and printing returns for a single state should be included in the purchase price. I expect it is in 2009.
It’s possible the electronic forms for your state have not yet been prepared, which is why you don’t have them yet. For my state, those weren’t available until February last year.

Some states require you to efile the state return if you efile the federal return. This forces the federal efiler to pay for filing the state return. It is almost impossible to find out what the state efiling fee is before you buy the software.

Review by admin, January 25, 2010

Or you ordered the version without the state.

This year’s Turbo Tax has been simplified. Step by step it is easy to follow. I was a Beta Tester. I recommend Turbo Tax 2009.

Glad to have the product early, but price cutting within same month raises question, specifically the FREE online offer from TurboTax

Review by admin, January 25, 2010

I have purchased Turbo Tax for about 10 years. Compared to previous years, this years Turbo tax is very difficult to use.

It does not seem to transfer all the information from previous years. It has asked me several times what was put on line XX of form XXXX(For last year). It should be able to figure it out. It had the previous years Turbo tax data file. Before this year Turbo Tax exceeded all my expectations. This year I feel it was not worth the money I spent on it. It is too bad because Turbo tax was a great piece of software. Next year I will probally purchase a different tax software.

Review by admin, January 25, 2010

All started well when I purchased this in December except my state (Indiana) return wasn’t available yet. That’s OK, but in early January when it became available the download section of TurboTax insisted on charging me for the state return. After a call to their support I was given a “free” state download — and then it turned out that the state return STILL wasn’t ready even though the download page didn’t report it. Frustrating (and a crummy job of rolling out updates!) but tolerable.

Then the fun began. I have a decent sized Federal refund coming, so I wanted to E-File. It was rejected with an error that said something about vehicles claimed on Schedule C. Guess what? I didn’t have a Schedule C!! I re-started the return and re-entered all of my data to be sure. When that was also rejected I called TT support and spent over an hour talking with a well-meaning young lady who was obviously very frustrated that she was unable to get a resolution to what must have been a software problem in TT. We never got a resolution and I had to get off of the phone, so I just gave up and copied the info from my TT forms into the fee efile at [...] Next year will be time to try someone other than TT unless Intuit can come up with some scheme to get their long-suffering customers a reason to believe in them. They have lost my trust.

I am a professional tax preparer. I’ve worked for HR Block, private tax firms and myself over a 15 year span. I’ve compared Tax Cut to Turbotax and believe Turbotax (at least through 2008 tax year) is superior, if you use Quicken software and have depreciation schedules, as I do.

I was intrepid after reading the problems with XP-Pro installation. However, I’ve used TurboTax for years, and TaxCut software just didn’t fit what we needed for the difference in price. I purchased the downloadable TurboTax software and decided I’d utilize the suggestions already posted by other consumers in their reviews if I had problems.

This software downloaded, installed & updated without a hitch! It’s open in the background as I’m writing this & has imported last year’s information successfully.

Just thought I’d add my input as I had no problems whatsoever with XP-Pro SP3. :) I’m happy!
